Major Z is direction before effort.
A framework for understanding where your effort is going — and how to move intentionally though the space between where you are and where you’re headed.
Why Major Z Exists
Most people aren't stuck because they lack motivation. They're stuck because effort is disconnected from direction. Major Z offers a way to think about and align your effort so it takes you where you actually want to go.
The Major Z Framework at a Glance
Major Z is a simple framework that names what already exists in your life — orientation (Point A), lived navigation (B–Y), and direction (Major Z).
Major Z Audio Notes
-
Hi, good evening, and welcome to Major Z Audio Notes with Dr. Lexus Drakeford.
Right now, I’m thinking about a smooth, quiet entry point for Major Z — into the podcast, and really into the world.
When I talk about Major Z, I’m talking about the direction and the destination you’re heading toward in life. Or more accurately, the direction and the destination you’re ultimately heading toward.
Major Z is a future state.
And that future state will look different for everyone.
When I talk about the Major Z framework, I’m talking about everything that surrounds that future state — where you are now, both physically and mentally, the mindset you have in relation to where you’re going, and how you navigate the space in between.
That starting point is what I call Point A.
Point A is the first realization that this framework exists — that there is a direction, that there is a destination you can orient your life toward. Over time, Point A becomes a place you return to. Not to rethink everything, but to check your compass.
Point A is about evaluation.
Am I still aligned?
Am I still going in the direction I intended to go?
It’s not a place to stay too long. Any mindset you stay in too long — even a reflective one — can become unproductive. That’s when overthinking starts. That’s when questioning your abilities starts.
There’s a difference between evaluating your decisions and doubting yourself.
Point A is meant to be productive. It’s about getting your ducks in a row. Evaluating the opportunities in front of you. Understanding what season you’re in — whether that’s a season of movement, stillness, or planning.
Most of life happens in what I call the B–Y Navigation Zone.
That’s the in-between.
The daily life.
The place where we’re constantly navigating.
Every day we wake up with a finite amount of time and energy. The question is whether the things we’re doing each day are actually aligned with the direction we say we’re going.
Time is linear.
Progress is not.
Progress moves forward, backward, sideways. But when you adopt a Major Z lens, progress stops feeling random. It becomes more predictable — not because life is predictable, but because you’re intentionally planning toward something.
That’s where Minor Zs come in.
Minor Zs are the things you intentionally choose because they align with your Major Z. And those Minor Zs are made up of Micro Zs — small, executable actions you can actually check off.
For me, one of my Minor Zs was writing a book.
The Micro Zs were things like creating an outline, writing pages, editing, formatting, designing the cover, uploading it, ordering proof copies. Once those Micro Zs were complete, the Minor Z was complete — by definition.
That’s how progress starts to form a through-line.
I think of it like a scatter plot. The dots might look random at first, but over time they create a line of best fit. That line is your direction. That’s your Major Z.
Life will still throw things at you.
Things you can’t control.
Transitions.
Delays.
Unexpected turns.
That’s where leadership comes in.
Leadership is the engine.
It keeps you moving when life knocks you off your feet.
It helps you know when to move, when to pause, when to rearrange, and when to stay committed.
Major Z doesn’t help you make perfect decisions.
It helps you make aligned ones.
And that’s enough.
